Introduce yourself in an English job interview
Build a short, truthful introduction for a job interview using your current work, a relevant skill, and a reason for applying.
“Tell me about yourself” is an invitation to explain what is relevant to the job. Prepare a short introduction you can adapt. Keep every claim true: simple English with a real example is more useful than a memorised speech about experience you do not have.
Try it in daily life
For a customer-service interview in Ethiopia, use this fictional example as a structure: “I’m Hana. I recently finished my studies. I helped customers in our family shop, and I would like to use that experience in this role.” Replace every detail with something true about you.
Use three parts
- Your current situation: what you do or what you recently studied.
- A relevant skill: one skill and a real example of using it.
- Your reason for applying: how the role connects to your interests or experience.

| English pattern | የአማርኛ ማብራሪያ |
|---|---|
| I currently work as a… | አሁን የሚሠሩትን ሥራ ለመግለጽ። |
| I recently graduated in… | በቅርቡ የተመረቁበትን የትምህርት ዘርፍ ለመግለጽ። |
| For example, I… | እውነተኛ ምሳሌ ለመስጠት። |
| I'm interested in this role because… | ለሥራው ያለዎትን ፍላጎት ለማብራራት። |
A worked example
“My name is Hana. I currently work as a shop assistant. I help customers find products and keep stock records. For example, I check the stock list at the end of each day. I'm interested in this role because I enjoy helping customers and want to develop my service skills.”
This is an invented practice example, not a claim about a Banana learner. Notice the specific action, “check the stock list,” instead of a vague claim such as “I am the best employee.”
If this is your first job
Use an honest example from a class, a project, volunteering, or another responsibility. You can say: “I recently finished my accounting course. In a class project, I organised our team's expense records.” Only use that example if it describes something you actually did.
If a question is unclear, say: “Could you explain what you mean, please?” You can also pause briefly to think before answering.
Try it yourself
- Complete: “I'm interested ___ this role because I enjoy helping customers.”
- Replace “I am hardworking” with one action that demonstrates your effort.
- Write an introduction of four or five sentences using the three parts above.
Check your answers
- in: “interested in this role.”
- Example: “I check every order before sending it.” Choose a truthful action from your experience.
- Check that your introduction includes your situation, an example, and a reason. Read it aloud and remove any sentence you cannot explain in your own words.
Practise a follow-up question, too. Banana's AI practice can help you rehearse, but it cannot guarantee a job or replace advice about a specific employer.
